Hi Alison! Thanks for finding the time to chat to us.
It’s a pleasure, Mike.
Please can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you decided to get involved with Just-Ice.
I’ve lived in Poynton for about 11 years. Jo and I met at St George’s and we became good friends. When Jo was in the discernment process with the CofE, she explored possible avenues for ministry and came across Just-Ice.
I’d met Gavin and Sally Murray whilst they were at Morden Baptist Church in South London so I knew a little about their move to Derby and founding Just-Ice. Jo asked me to support as a trustee and it’s been a privilege from the start!
There's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes at Just-Ice. What do you find most enjoyable about being a Trustee?
I love the Just-Ice café! It always feels so nice to be in a lovely supportive friendly environment.
It’s amazing to see how the survivors / beneficiaries we have worked alongside, have blossomed during their time in the nurturing workplace. Our staff and volunteers do an incredible job in this regard - it’s hard to describe this really as each individual has a different starting point, a range of circumstances which have led them to us and there are many other factors to consider. I believe that every beneficiary has been welcomed, encouraged and championed and it’s very heart-warming to see their progress.
What is the most surprising thing you've learned about modern slavery?
Hmm, I'm not sure what the most surprising thing has been really. It's a common misconception that more women are exploited than men when actually the opposite is true. I think for this reason a few of us initially thought we'd be working with more women than men, but this hasn't been the case.
Is there anything in particular you've seen during your time at Just-Ice which shows the difference we're making?
The most encouraging thing for me is to remember how beneficiaries are when we first meet them, in contrast to when they are a couple of years further on. It’s a delight to see their personalities come out, their confidence growing and their sense of humour and laughter surface, especially when they can appear fearful, wary and unsure at the start of their time with Just Ice.
What's your favourite flavour of ice cream?
Favourite ice cream? Ooh, this changes on a regular basis… but currently I love rhubarb and ginger!
Thanks Alison!
We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all our fantastic Trustees! They work so hard on a voluntary basis with such dedication and it often goes on behind the scenes. Just-Ice couldn't function without them and we're so grateful for all they do!
